Its features are the old windmills with their white sails that painted a magical picture in the past, although now there are only a few remaining to remind people the old tradition of the area. Visit the picturesque villages found around the plateau, taste the local traditional cuisine and visit the Monastery of Palagias Krystallenias and the Monastery of Vithiani. The most important of the sights of the plateau is the cave of Dikteon Antron and according to the myth is Zeus' birthplace. In order for you to get acquainted with the history of the area, there is no need to travel far... Even at the Hersonissos Port you may walk around to admire many important monuments that bear the mark of different historical periods.
From the east, just 2 km from the Port you may visit the Early Christian Basilica of St. Nikolaos found next to the sea. It is a three-nave church perhaps built on top of the ruins of a Roman temple. Possibly dating back to the late 5th and early 6th century, it has impressive mosaic floors with animals, plants, geometric shapes and colonnades between the three naves. Today, the sea covers part of the church.
Continuing towards the west, on the coastal road of Hersonissos, the fountain Sarakino is found decorated by impressive mosaics and sea scenes. Finally, the ruins of an early Christian Basilica of the 5th century are found on the rock of Kastri. The impressive mosaic floors with plants and geometric shapes are visible even today.
The Monastery of Kera Kardiotissa is an old convent found on the northern side of mount Dikti, next to a road that leads to Lassithi Plateau. It is famous for the healing powers of its icon of Panagia Kardiotissa. The icon has been stolen many times in the past, however, according to traditions, it always returns to the convent. The stone-built church of the convent is dedicated to the Birth of Mary and celebrates on the 8th of September. Inside the church, many frescoes on the 14th and 15th century are found.
